Bolts, nuts, and screws are all fasteners. Bolts and nuts can be used together, and screws can be used separately. The difference between a bolt and a stud is that one end of the bolt has a polygon that can be twisted, while the stud only has an external thread on a cylindrical piece.
Screw is an incorrect term used by non professionals to refer to threaded parts, which is not commonly used in the industry.
In the fastener industry, there is actually no strict distinction between screws and bolts. However, there are two methods within the industry to distinguish between screws and bolts:
1. According to the structure of the wrench, the so-called wrench structure refers to the place where the wrench is placed on the screw/bolt. In some systems, the external threaded rod like parts of the external wrench structure are collectively referred to as bolts, while the internal wrench structure is referred to as screws. External wrench structure: hexagonal head bolt; Internal wrench structure: Hexagon bolts, etc., which are obvious examples of fasteners in Chinese national standards, such as GB5782 and GB5783 (one half thread and one full thread). Because they are all hexagonal structures, they are collectively referred to as bolts in standard names.
2. Distinguish based on whether the product has non threaded rod features. This is also a widely used classification method, which generally distinguishes between bolts and screws. That is: if all the rods of the product are threaded except for the head, this part is called a screw. On the contrary, if, in addition to the thread, it also has characteristics such as a smooth rod, it is called a bolt.
3. Screws are a relatively general term.
The accurate statement should be bolts, screws, and screw caps.
Both bolts and screws are circular and elongated objects with evenly spaced threads engraved on them.
The bolt is a flat head cylindrical type; The screw is pointed like a nail at the front.
Bolts must be used together with screw caps or on objects that have already been threaded.
Screws are used on relatively soft or thin objects, and when used, they use their own threaded edges to rotate and drill forward.
The threads on the bolts are relatively shallow without sharp edges; The thread on the screw is sharp and deep, which is conducive to drilling into the object.
Most bolts and screws require a commonly used simple tool - a screwdriver.
